Martin Luther Quotes

We have compiled one of the largest collections of Martin Luther quotes available online. These famous sayings by the great Protestant reformer are still cited (and relevant) today. Of course the most memorable adage that Martin Luther is known for is his quote before the Diet of Worms…“Here I Stand”. We hope you enjoy this compilation of Martin Luther quotes.

  • A Christian man is the most free lord of all, and subject to none; a Christian man is the most dutiful servant of all, and subject to everyone.
  • A person who…does not regard music as a marvelous creation of God, must be a clodhopper indeed and does not deserve to be called a human being; he should be permitted to hear nothing but the braying of asses and the grunting of hogs.
  • A prince is venison in heaven.
  • A unjust law, is no law at all.
  • A woman must be a woman and cannot be a man. She, too, is God’s creature and her divine station is that she should bear and care for and rear children. So I am a man created for another office and work. But should I be proud because of this and say: I am not a woman, therefore I am better in the sight of God? Should I not rather praise God for creating both the woman and me also through the woman and putting me in this station? What a un-Christian thing it is that one should despire another because he is in another station or is doing something other then he is doing?… Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled. for God will not and can not tolerate such pride and arrogance.
  • All heathen books are poisoned through and through with this striving after praise and honor.
  • All the cunning of the devil is exercised in trying to tear us away from the word.
  • All we who believe on Christ are kings and priests in Christ.
  • All who call on God in true faith, earnestly from the heart, will certainly be heard, and will receive what they have asked and desired.
  • Although it is very easy to marry a wife, it is very difficult to support her along with the children and the household. Accordingly, no one notices this faith of Jacob. Indeed, many hate fertility in a wife for the sole reason that the offspring must be supported and brought up. For this is what they commonly say: ‘Why should I marry a wife when I am a pauper and a beggar? I would rather bear the burden of poverty alone and not load myself with misery and want.’ But this blame is unjustly fastened on marriage and fruitfulness. Indeed, you are indicting your unbelief by distrusting God’s goodness, and you are bringing greater misery upon yourself by disparaging God’s blessing. For if you had trust in God’s grace and promises, you would undoubtedly be supported. But because you do not hope in the Lord, you will never prosper.
  • And what is it that preachers do, to this very day? Do they interpret and expound the Scriptures? Yet if the Scripture they expound is uncertain, who can assure us that heir exposition is certain? Another new exposition? And who will expound the exposition? At this rate we will go on forever. In short, if Scripture is obscure or ambiguous, what part is there in God’s giving it to us?
  • Anyone who is to find Christ must first find the church. How could anyone know where Christ is and what faith is in him unless he knew where his believers are?
  • Are we not to call Christ ours because we have not made him but only received him? Again, if we are the makers of things that are called ours, then we must have made our eyes, we must have made our hands, we must have made our feet, unless eyes, hands and feet are not to be called ours.
  • As long as we live there is never enough singing.
  • As when my little son John offendeth: if then I should not whip him, but call him to the table unto me, and give him sugar and plums, thereby, I should make him worse, yea should quite spoil him.
  • Be a sinner and sin strongly, but more strongly have faith and rejoice in Christ.
  • Be thou comforted, little dog, Thou too in Resurrection shall have a little golden tail.
  • Beautiful music is the art of the prophets that can calm the agitations of the soul; it is one of the most magnificent and delightful presents God has given us.
  • Beer is made by men, wine by God.
  • Believest thou? then thou wilt speak boldly. Speakest thou boldy? then thou must suffer. Sufferest thou? then thou shalt be comforted. For … faith, the confession thereof, and the cross do follow one another.
  • Bewilderment is the true comprehension. Not to know where you are going is the true knowledge.
  • Blood alone moves the wheels of history.
  • Christ is the Master; the Scriptures are only the servant. The true way to test all the Books is to see whether they work the will of Christ or not. No Book which does not preach Christ can be apostolic, though Peter or Paul were its author. And no Book which does preach Christ can fail to be apostolic, although Judas, Ananias, Pilate, or Herod were its author.
  • Christ sayeth not, Abstain from the flesh, from marrying, from housekeeping, etc., as the Papists teach, for that were even to invite the devil and all his fellows to a feast.
  • Despair makes priests and friars.
  • Discipleship is not limited to what you can comprehend–it must transcend all comprehension. Plunge into the deep waters beyond your own comprehension, and I will help you to comprehend even as I do. Bewilderment is the true comprehension. Not to know where you are going is the true knowledge. My comprehension transcends yours. Thus Abraham went forth from his father and not knowing whither he went. He trusted himself to my knowledge, and cared not for his own, and thus he took the right road and came to his journey’s end. Behold, that is the way of the cross. You cannot find it yourself, so you must let me lead you as though you were a blind man. Wherefore it is not you, no man, no living creature, but I myself, who instruct you by my word and Spirit in the way you should go. Not the work which you choose, not the suffering you devise, but the road which is clean contrary to all that you choose or contrive or desire–that is the road you must take. To that I call you and in that you must be my disciple.
  • Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree.
  • Every book is a great action and every great action is a book!
  • Every man must do two things alone; he must do his own believing and his own dying..
  • Everything that is done in this world is done by hope.
  • Faith is a living, daring confidence in God’s grace, so sure and certain that a man could stake his life on it a thousand times.
  • Faith is permitting ourselves to be seized by the things we do not see.
  • Faith must trample under foot all reason, sense, and understanding.
  • False preachers are worse than deflowerers of virgins.
  • Feelings come and feelings go.
  • First I shake the whole apple tree, that the ripest might fall. Then I climb the tree and shake each limb, and then each branch and then each twig, and then I look under each leaf.
  • For hardly any of the ecclesiastical writers have handled the Divine Scriptures more ineptly and absurdly than Origen and Jerome.
  • For in the true nature of things, if we rightly consider, every green tree is far more glorious than if it were made of gold and silver.
  • For the kingdom is not being prepared, but has been prepared, while the sons of the Kingdom are being prepared, not preparing the Kingdom; that is to say, the Kingdom merits the sons, not the songs the Kingdom. So all hell merits and prepares its children rather than they it.
  • For where God built a church, there the Devil would also build a chapel.
  • Forgiveness is God’s command.
  • God writes the Gospel not in the Bible alone, but also on trees, and in the flowers and clouds and stars.
  • Good news from heaven the angels bring.
  • Good works are the seals and proofs of faith; for even as a letter must have a seal to strengthen the same, even so faith must have good works.
  • Grant that I may not pray alone with the mouth; help me that I may pray from the depths of my heart.
  • Great thieves go scott-free, as the Pope and his crew.
  • He died for me. He made His righteousness mine and made my sin His own; and if He made my sin His own, then I do not have it, and I am free.
  • He who loves not wine, women and song remains a fool his whole life long.
  • Here again Diatribe confidently brings in a gloss to suit herself, just as if Scripture were under her complete control. As for considering the prophet’s meaning and intention, what need was there for a man of such authority to do that? All we need is: Erasmus says so, therefore it is so.
  • Here again you confuse and mix everything up in your usual way.
  • Here I stand; I can do no other.
  • Here where we are concerned not with the dogma of Scripture and the Corycian cavern only, but in very truth with the awful secrets of the Divine Majesty (namely, why he works in the way we have said), here you smash bolts and bars and rush in all but blaspheming, as indignant as possible with God because you are not allowed to see the meaning and purpose of such a judgment of his.
  • How can a reason which hates God be called sound?
  • How foolish it was of Christ to purchase for us at the price of his shed blood the Spirit we did not need, in order that we might be given a facility in keeping the commandments, who we already have one by nature.
  • How is it then that your theologians drivel like people in their second childhood.
  • I am afraid that the schools will prove the very gates of hell, unless they diligently labor in explaining the Holy Scriptures and engraving them in the heart of the youth.
  • I am more afraid of my own heart than of the pope and all his cardinals. I have within me the great pope, Self.
  • I am of a different mind ten times in the course of a day. But I resist the devil, and often it is with a fart that I chase him away. When he tempts me with silly sins I say, ‘Devil, yesterday I broke wind too. Have you written it down on your list?
  • I cannot and will not recant anything, for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. Here I stand, I can do no other, so help me God. Amen.
  • I cannot choose but adhere to the word of God, which has possession of my conscience; nor can I possibly, nor will I even make any recantation, since it is neither safe nor honest to act contrary to conscience! Here I stand; I cannot do otherwise, so help me God! Amen.
  • I cannot see why she lengthens her list nor thinks we are short of weapons with which to run her through.
  • I compare it with a lie, which like to a snowball, the longer it is rolled the greater it becomes.
  • I feel much freer now that I am certain the pope is the Antichrist.
  • I frankly confess that even if it were possible I should not wish to have free choice given to me, or to have anything left in my own hands by which I might strive for salvation.
  • I have held many things in my hands, and I have lost them all; but whatever I have placed in God’s hands, that I still possess.
  • I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer.
  • I know not the way He leads me, but well I know my guide.
  • I more fear what is within me than what comes from without.
  • I owe you a small thanks, for you have made me far more sure of my own position by letting me see the case for free choice put forward with all the energy of so distinguished and powerful a mind, but with no other effect than to make things worse than before.
  • I see a word that hates evil more than it loves good.
  • I shall never be a heretic; I may err in dispute, but I do not wish to decide anything finally; on the other hand, I am not bound by the opinions of men.
  • I will keep an eye on Diatribe, with her big talk and heroic gestures, to see with what force she will bring down my Achilles, when hitherto she has never managed to hit a common soldier, not even a Thersites, but she has shot her miserable self to pieces with her own weapons.
  • I will say something still easier. Take a single flea or louse-since you tempt and mock our God with this talk about curing a lame horse-and if, after combining all the powers and concentrating all the efforts both of your good and all your supporters, you succeed in killing it in the name of free choice, you shall be victorious, your case shall be established, and we too will come at once and worship that god of yours, that wonderful killer of the louse.
  • If anyone attempted to rule the world by the gospel and to abolish all temporal law and sword on the plea that all are baptized and Christian, and that, according to the gospel, there shall be among them no law or sword – or need for either – pray tell me, friend, what would he be doing? He would be loosing the ropes and chains of the savage wild beasts and letting them bite and mangle everyone, meanwhile insisting that they were harmless, tame, and gentle creatures; but I would have the proof in my wounds. Just so would the wicked under the name of Christian abuse evangelical freedom, carry on their rascality, and insist that they were Christians subject neither to law nor sword, as some are already raving and ranting.
  • If God had not permitted the people of Jerusalem to be torn asunder and driven them from the land, but had let them keep it after before, no one could convince them that they are not God`s chosen people.
If he have faith, the believer cannot be restrained. He betrays himself. He breaks out. He confesses and teaches this gospel to the people at the risk of life itself.
  • If I am not allowed to laugh in heaven, I don’t want to go there.
  • If I profess with the loudest voice and clearest exposition every portion of the truth of God except precisely that little point which the world and the devil are at that moment attacking, I am not confessing Christ, however boldly I may be professing Christ. Where the battle rages, there the loyalty of the soldier is proved; and to be steady on all the battlefield besides, is mere flight and disgrace if he flinches at that point.
  • If then, Moses so distinctly announces that there is in us not only a faculty, but also a facility for keeping all commandments, why are we sweating so much? … What need is there now of Christ or of Spirit? We have found a passage that asserts freedom of choice, but also distinctly teaches that the keeping of the commandments is easy.
  • If there is anything in us, it is not our own; it is a gift of God. But if it is a gift of God, then it is entirely a debt one owes to love, that is, to the law of Christ. And if it is a debt owed to love, then I must serve others with it, not myself.
  • If you are not allowed to laugh in heaven, I don’t want to go there.
  • If you consider this subject unnecessary for Christians, then please quit the field; you and I have nothing in common, for I consider it vital.
  • If you want to change the world, pick up your pen and write.
  • If you want to interpret well and confidently, set Christ before you, for He is the man to whom it all applies, every bit of it.
  • If you young fellows were wise, the devil couldn’t do anything to you, but since you aren’t wise, you need us who are old.
  • In his life Christ is an example showing.
  • In the midst of the affliction He counsels, strengthens confirms, nourishes, and favors us…. More over, when we have repented, He instantly remits the sins as well as the punishments. In the same manner parents ought to handle their children.
  • In the third section, you proceed to turn us into modest and peace-loving Epicureans.
  • Indeed, to spur your Baal to action, I will taunt and challenge you … to create as much as a single frog in the name and by the power of free choice, though the heathen and ungodly magicians in Egypt were able to create many…. I will not set you the heavy task of creating lice, which they could not produce either.
  • It is better to think of church in the ale-house than to think of the ale-house in church.
  • It is neither right nor safe to go against my conscience.
  • It was easy for you to say these things, since you either knew you were not writing to Luther, but for the general public, or you did not reflect that it was Luther you were writing against, whom I hope you allow nonetheless to have some acquaintance with Holy Writ and some judgment in respect of it.
  • It was expected, however, that [Erasmus] should make some reply and give some definition. But instead, by availing himself of a rhetorical transition, he drags us who knew nothing of rhetoric away with him, as if the matter at issue here were of no moment, but simply a lot of quibbling, and dashes bravely out of the crowded court, crowned with ivy and laurel.
  • I’ve got so much work to do today, I’d better spend two hours in prayer instead of one.
  • Jerome has merited hell rather than heaven for it-so little would I dare to recognize or call him a saint.
  • Justice is a temporary thing that must at last come to an end; but the conscience is eternal and will never die.
  • Let the wife make the husband glad to come home, and let him make her sorry to see him leave.
Many pass for saints on earth whose souls are in hell.
  • Maternity is a glorious thing, since all mankind has been conceived, born, and nourished of women. All human laws should encourage the multiplication of families.
  • Music is the art of the prophets and the gift of God.
  • My father and mother did not think they should have brought a superintendent into the world.
  • My heart, which is so full to overflowing, has often been solaced and refreshed by music when sick and weary.
  • Next to the Word of God, music deserves the highest praise. The gift of language combined with the gift of song was given to man that he should proclaim the Word of God through Music.
  • Next to the Word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world.
No great saint lived without errors.
  • No one can believe how powerful prayer is and what it can effect, except those who have learned it by experience. Whenever I have prayed earnestly, I have been heard and have obtained more than I prayed for. God sometimes delays, but He always comes.
  • Nothing good ever comes of violence.
  • Now I know from this very word and deed of yours what free choice is and is capable of, namely, madness.
One Book is enough, but a thousand books is not too many!
  • Our Lord has written the promise of resurrection, not in books alone, but in every leaf in springtime.
  • Our whole life should be manly; we should fear God and put our trust in him.
  • Peace if possible. Truth at all costs.
  • Peace is more important than all justice; and peace was not made for the sake of justice, but justice for the sake of peace.
  • People must have righteous principals in the first, and then they will not fail to perform virtuous actions.
  • Philosophy is the Devil’s Whore.
  • Pray, and let God worry.
  • Prayer is a strong wall and fortress of the church; it is a goodly Christian weapon.
  • Reason is a whore, the greatest enemy that faith has; it never comes to the aid of spiritual things, but more frequently than not struggles against the divine Word, treating with contempt all that emanates from God.
  • Reason is the enemy of faith.
  • Reason should be destroyed in all Christians.
  • She catches hold, then of this word nothing, and stabs at it with a multitude of words and examples, and by means of a suitable interpretation, reduces it to this, that nothing can mean the same as only a little thing or an imperfect thing; she expounds in other words what the Sophists have hitherto taught regarding this passage: Apart from me you can do nothing, that is to say nothing perfectly.
  • So when the devil throws your sins in your face and declares that you deserve death and hell, tell him this: I admit that I deserve death and hell, what of it? For I know One who suffered and made satisfaction on my behalf. His name is Jesus Christ, Son of God, and where He is there I shall be also!
  • Stop your complaining, stop your doctoring; this tumult has arisen and is direct from above, and it will not cease till it makes all the adversaries of the Word like the mud on the streets. But it is sad to have to remind a theologian like you of these things, as if you were a pupil instead of one who ought to be teaching others.
  • That is what Reason can neither grasp nor endure, and what has offended all these men of outstanding talent who have been so received for so many centuries. Here they demand that God should act according to human justice, and do what seems right to them or else cease to be God.
  • That prudence of yours makes you veer about, determined not to commit yourself to either side, but to pass safely between Scylla and Charybdis; with the result that, finding yourself battered and buffeted by the waves in the midst of the sea, you assert everything you deny and deny everything you assert.
The best way to drive out the devil, if he will not yield to texts of Scripture, is to jeer and flout him, for he cannot bear scorn.
  • The Bible is the cradle wherein Christ is laid.
  • The Church of Rome, formerly the most holy of all Churches, has become the most lawless den of thieves, the most shameless of all brothels, the very kingdom of sin, death, and hell; so that not even antichrist, if he were to come, could devise any addition to its wickedness.
  • The devil and temptations also do give occasion unto us somewhat to learn and understand the Scriptures, by experience and practice. Without trials and temptations we should never understand anything thereof; no, not although we diligently read and heard the same.
  • The devil, the originator of sorrowful anxieties and restless troubles, flees before the sound of music almost as much as before the Word of God….Music is a gift and grace of God, not an invention of men. Thus it drives out the devil and makes people cheerful. Then one forgets all wrath, impurity, and other devices.
  • The dog is the most faithful of animals and would be much esteemed were it not so common. Our Lord God has made His greatest gifts the commonest.
  • The fewer the words, the better the prayer.
  • The God of this world is riches, pleasure and pride.
  • The gospel cannot be truly preached without offense and tumult.
  • The heart overflows with gladness, and leaps and dances for the joy it has found in God. In this experience the Holy Spirit is active, and has taught us in the flash of a moment the deep secret of joy. You will have as much joy and laughter in life as you have faith in God.
  • The Lord commonly gives riches to foolish people, to whom he gives nothing else.
  • The man who has the will to undergo all labor may win to any good.
  • The Pope is a mere tormentor of conscience. The assembly of his greased and religious crew in praying was altogether like the croaking of frogs, which edified nothing at all.
  • The reproduction of mankind is a great marvel and mystery. Had God consulted me in the matter, I should have advised him to continue the generation of the species by fashioning them out of clay.
  • The truth of the matter is rather as Christ says, He who is not with me is against me. … He does not say He who is not with me is not against me either, but merely neutral.
  • The very simple meaning of what Moses says, therefore, is this: everything that is, was created by God.
  • The will is a beast of burden. If God mounts it, it wishes and goes as God wills; if Satan mounts it, it wishes and goes as Satan wills; Nor can it choose its rider… the riders contend for its possession.
  • There are some who are still weak in faith, who ought to be instructed, and who would gladly believe as we do. But their ignorance prevents them…we must bear patiently with these people and not use our liberty; since it brings to peril or harm to body or soul…but if we use our liberty unnecessarily, and deliberately cause offense to our neighbor, we drive away the very one who in time would come to our faith. Thus St. Paul circumcised Timothy (Acts 16:3) because simple minded Jews had taken offense; he thought: what harm can it do, since they are offended because of ignorance? But when, in Antioch, they insisted that he out and must circumcise Titus (Gal. 2:3) Paul withstood them all and to spite them refused to have Titus circumcised… He did the same when St. Peter…it happened in this way: when Peter was with the Gentiles he ate pork and sausages with them, but when the Jews came in, he abstained from this food and did not eat as he did before. Then the Gentiles who had become Christians though: Alas! we, too, must be like the Jews, eat no pork, and live according to the law of Moses. But when Paul learned that they were acting to the injury of evangelical freedom, he reproved Peter publicly and read him an apostolic lecture, saying: “If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile, how can you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?” (Gal. 2:14). Thus we, too, should order our lives and use our liberty at the proper time, so that Christian liberty may suffer no injury, and no offense be given to our weak brothers and sisters who are still without the knowledge of this liberty.
  • There are two days in my calendar: This day and that Day.
  • There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must take it because his conscience tells him it is right….
  • There is no more lovely, friendly and charming relationship, communion, or company than a good marriage.
  • There never yet have been, nor are there now, too many good books.
  • Therefore nothing were better for us than soon to be conveyed to the last dance, and covered with shovels.
  • Therefore, when some say good works are forbidden when we preach faith alone, it is as if I said to a sick man: If you had health, you would have the use of your limbs; but without health the works of your limbs are nothing’ and he wanted to infer that I had forbidden the works of all his limbs.
  • These words of yours, devoid of Christ, devoid of Spirit, are colder than ice itself, so that they tarnish the beauty of your eloquence. Perhaps they were dragged out of you, poor fellow, by fear of the pontiffs and tyrants, lest you should seem altogether an atheist!
  • They are trying to make me into a fixed star. I am an irregular planet.
  • This grace of God is a very great, strong, mighty and active thing. It does not lie asleep in the soul.
Grace hears, leads, drives, draws, changes, works all in man, and lets itself be distinctly felt and experienced. It is hidden, but its works are evident.
  • This is the most dangerous trial of all, when there is no trial and everything is and goes well; for then a man is tempted to forget God, to become too bold and to misuse the times of prosperity.
  • This is the reason why our Theology is certain: because it seizes us from ourselves and places us outside ourselves.
  • This life therefore is not righteousness, but growth in righteousness, not health, but healing, not being but becoming, not rest but exercise. We are not yet what we shall be, but we are growing toward it, the process is not yet finished, but it is going on, this is not the end, but it is the road. All does not yet gleam in glory, but all is being purified.
  • This new subterfuge is, of course, calculated to deceive the simple and innocent into thinking that the matter is settled.
  • Those speak foolishly who ascribe their anger or their impatience to such as offend them or to tribulation. Tribulation does not make people impatient, but proves that they are impatient. So everyone may learn from tribulation how his heart is constituted.
  • Thus every matter, if it is to be done well, calls for the attention of the whole person.
Thus, dear friends, I have said it clearly enough, and I believe you ought to understand it and not make liberty a law…
  • To call a man without the Holy Spirit upright and God-fearing is the same as calling Belial Christ.
  • To gather with God’s people in united adoration of the Father is as necessary to the Christian life as prayer.
  • True humility does not know that it is humble. If it did, it would be proud from the contemplation of so fine a virtue.
  • War is the greatest plague that can afflict humanity, it destroys religion, it destroys states, it destroys families. Any scourge is preferable to it.
  • We are nothing with all our gifts be they ever so great, except God assist us.
  • We are saved by faith alone, but the faith that saves is never alone.
  • We come to the New Testament, where again a host of imperative verbs is mustered in support of that miserable bondage of free-choice, and the aid of carnal Reason with her inferences and similes is called in, just as in a picture or a dream you might see the King of the flies with his lances of straw and shields of hay arrayed against a real and regular army of seasoned human troops. That is how the human dreams of Diatribe go to war with the battalions of divine words.
  • What I am after in this dispute is to me something serious, necessary, and indeed eternal, something of such a kind and such importance that it ought to be asserted and defended to the death, even if the whole world had not only to be thrown into strife and confusion, but actually to return to total chaos and be reduced to nothingness.
  • what is sought by means of free choice is to make room for merits.
  • ‎What you do in your house is worth as much as if you did it up in heaven for our Lord God. We should accustom ourselves to think of our position and work as sacred and well-pleasing to God, not on account of the position and work, but on account of the word and faith from which the obedience and work flow.
Whatever your heart clings to and confides in, that is really your God.
  • When God’s righteousness is mentioned in the gospel, it is God’s action of declaring righteous the unrighteous sinner who has faith in Jesus Christ. The righteousness by which a person is justified (declared righteous) is not his own but that of another, Christ.
  • When I am angry I can pray well and preach well.
  • When schools flourish, all flourishes.
  • When some people say, as they do, that when we preach faith alone good works are forbidden, it is as if I were to say to a sick man, If you had health you would have the full use of all your limbs, but without health the works of all your limbs are nothing, and from this he wanted to infer that I had forbidden the works of his limbs. Whereas on the contrary I meant that the health must first be there to work all the works of all his limbs. In the same way faith must be the master-workman and captain in all the works, or they are nothing at all.
  • Whenever the devil harasses you, seek the company of men or drink more, or joke and talk nonsense, or do some other merry thing. Sometimes we must drink more, sport, recreate ourselves, and even sin a little to spite the devil, so that we leave him no place for troubling our consciences with trifles. We are conquered if we try too conscientiously not to sin at all. So when the devil says to you: do not drink, answer him: I will drink, and right freely, just because you tell me not to.
  • Where the battle rages, there the loyalty of the soldier is proved.
  • Where, then, is our orator running off to, who was going to speak about a palm, but talks of nothing but a gourd? It started as a wine jar, why does it end as a water jug?
  • Whoever wants to be a Christian should tear the eyes out of his reason.
  • Why do you rant and brag with such a spate of words, as if you wanted to overwhelm me with a sort of tempest and deluge of oratory-which nevertheless falls with the greater force on your own head, while my ark rides aloft in safety?
  • With such and the like fopperies were petty brains troubled.
  • You are not only responsible for what you say, but also for what you do not say.
  • You have as much laughter as you have faith.
  • You have quite dampened by spirit and eagerness, and left me exhausted before I could strike a blow. There are two reasons for this: first, your cleverness in treating the subject with such remarkable and consistent moderation as to make it impossible for me to be angry with you; and secondly, the luck or chance or fate by which you say nothing on this important subject that has not been said before.
  • You see, however, which is called the Court of Rome, and which neither you nor any man can deny to be more corrupt than any Babylon or Sodom, and quite, as I believe, of a lost, desperate and hopeless impiety.
  • You should not believe your conscience and your feelings more than the word which the Lord who receives sinners preaches to you.
